STEM Learning at ISB

At the International School of Brussels (ISB), STEM is an integrated approach to learning that brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to prepare students for problem-solving, innovation, and future careers. Embedded across the curriculum, STEM learning empowers students to explore, design, question, and innovate through hands-on, interdisciplinary experiences that build scientific inquiry, digital literacy, engineering and design thinking, and real-world mathematical reasoning. The programme is intentionally designed to grow with students, from early exploration in the Early Childhood Centre to advanced application and pathways in High School.

Develop individualised pathways for students with specialised interests in STEM.

Ensure access to high-quality facilities, training, and resources.

Early Childhood Centre

Early Childhood Centre (Pre-K to Grade 2)

Building Curiosity Through Play and Design

In the Early Childhood Centre, STEM learning focuses on curiosity, creativity, and exploration. Through play-based and hands-on experiences, students are introduced to early engineering, materials science, and problem-solving.

Outdoor STEM Learning

ISB’s outdoor playground spaces support hands-on STEM exploration, giving students room to design, build, and test ideas with imagination through collaborative play.

Building Rube Goldberg machines to explore forces and motion
Testing materials and their properties through guided design challenges
Designing cardboard arcade games that introduce simple circuits

These experiences encourage young learners to ask questions, experiment, and see themselves as capable designers and builders.

Elementary School

Elementary School (Grades 3–6)

Design Thinking, Inquiry, and Technology Integration

Elementary students deepen their STEM understanding through structured design cycles, scientific inquiry, and purposeful use of technology. Projects integrate science, mathematics, engineering, and coding while promoting collaboration and reflection.

Designing transportation devices using the engineering design cycle
Egg Drop Design Cycle challenge (designing, testing, and improving protective prototypes)
Simulating earthquakes and analysing data using micro:bits
Exploring scientific thinking through hands-on experiments
Making dyes and exploring design patterns through creative, process-based investigations
Designing, testing, and presenting science fair experiments, including clear communication of methods, data, and conclusions
Applying the scientific method to investigate forces, energy, and change

Students begin collecting and analysing data, refining designs, and communicating their thinking with increasing independence.

Middle School

Middle School (Grades 7–9)

Applying STEM Concepts to Real-World Challenges

Middle School STEM learning emphasises real-world application, experimentation, and sustainability. Students engage in complex challenges that require analysis, iteration, and collaboration.

High School

Advanced Application, Pathways, and Partnerships

High School STEM learning focuses on advanced application, mathematical reasoning, and authentic problem-solving. Students engage in collaborative projects, electives, and extracurricular opportunities that prepare them for post-secondary pathways.
