Tuesday, September 22 marked the launch of our first In The Zone day in the Middle School, an event designed to introduce new, dynamic approaches to learning. The day started with an introduction talk by Scott McLeod (above), renowned education technology, innovation and social media expert.
Middle School students had the opportunity to try out six different zones throughout the day: Design, code, express, make, discover and communicate.
In the Design Zone, students created beautiful light boxes. They used Scratch, a visual programming language, to create games in the Code Zone.
The Storyteller, Niall de Burca, led the Express Zone and worked with students on new ways of expressing themselves. The Discover Zone was an introduction to the basics of Mindfulness and meditation. And the Communicate Zone saw our students becoming news anchors and creating news with the support of the Sky TV team.

Of particular note, the Make Zone was run by ISB alumni, Joachim Horn '09, David Weiss '09, and Kevin Haughan '09. MS students learned to make connections between engineering and technology by building SAM Labs rovers controlled by mobile phones. You can see alum, David Weiss, working with students in this short video.

It was fantastic to see our students truly In The Zone and finding "the excitement at making it work", as one of our students tweeted. As summed up by Lee Fertig, ISB Director, it was a "great day of innovation, imagination, creativity and collaboration".Thanks to Solvay, ISB Visiting Artists Program, SAM Labs, Sky TV, Eurest and MS Faculty for supporting this initiative.
