The End of a School Year Means New Beginnings 

 

As ISB's special 65th year comes to a close, we are reminded of the powerful life-cycle of the academic year. The notion of transition is especially important in an international community like ISB where quite a few members of our family move on to another chapter in their lives.

Greg Murawsky - 2016-2017 James Sidgwick Teacher Recognition Award Recipient

 

In May, we invited the ISB alumni community to nominate Middle School teachers who have worked at ISB for 5 years or more and whose professionalism and dedication deserves to be recognised. We are pleased to announce that this year The James Sidgwick Teacher Recognition Award has been awarded to Greg Murawsky, who has taught at ISB for the last 19 years.

Alumni Speak About Rebuilding & Innovation at Careers Day

 

ISB's annual Beyond ISB Careers Day is one strand of the World of Work programme, which focuses on building bridges between students and the world outside to help them make informed study choices for their future careers. The theme for for Beyond ISB 2017 on 19 May was "Rebuilding and Innovation - Looking Ahead to 21st Century Careers".

Annual Former Faculty and Staff Spring Cocktail Reception Another Smashing Success

 

They say it only takes doing something twice for it to become a tradition. In that case - it's official! The Former Faculty and Staff Spring Cocktail Reception is now an annual ISB tradition! For the third year running, ISB former faculty and staff friends were invited to the Former Faculty and Staff Spring Cocktail Reception on Thursday, 6 April - this year to celebrate ISB's 2017 ISB retirees.

A Tribute to Our 2017 Retirees

 

June 2017 sees nine members of the faculty and staff retire from ISB after decades of service to the school. All nine celebrated their careers and achievements this spring with colleagues across the divisions as they bid farewell to ISB. Read the reflections of two colleagues on their ISB experience and the things they're looking forward to next.

Graduation 2017: Student Speaker Challenges ISB Mission 


Friday, 2 June was an emotional evening as the ISB Class of 2017 officially graduated from the school. We wish the Class of 2017 the best of luck and look forward to welcoming them back very soon as members of the school's alumni community.

Sam Horn '10 Shines A Light On The European Refugee Crisis

 

In this spotlight hear from Sam Horn '10 about the Odyssey Project, a documentary tracing the journey of a van through one of the main migration routes into Europe, from Turkey to Brussels, the heart of the European Union.

Former ISB Middle School Math Teacher Wins Seat in UK Parliament

 

ISB would like to congratulate Former Middle School Math Teacher Layla Moran on winning the Oxfordshire seat from Nicola Blackwood in the recent UK election.

Omar Fawzy '84 and Partner 

 

On a recent trip to Amsterdam and Paris, Omar Fawzey '84 wanted to bring his partner to Brussels and ISB so he could share that part of his life with her. Omar attended ISB in Grades 11 and 12 and in particular remembers his football coach and former teacher, Gino Prozzi. He now lives in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Debra Dobson '74 and Denise Dobson Ten Brink '78


Sisters Denise Dobson Ten Brink '78 and Debra Dobson '74 returned to the ISB campus for a visit when Denise visited Belgium. Denise lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Debra lives in Kortenberg, Belgium.

Thomas and Liz Halsey P'96, '97, '02 and Granddaughter Ella

 
Thomas and Liz Halsey P'96, '97, '02 and granddaughter Ella visited ISB on a recent trip to Europe. Thomas and Liz wanted Ella to see where their father went to school so brought her to ISB for a tour of the campus. Thomas and Liz had three children who attended ISB: Chuck Halsey '96 (father of Ella), Tom Halsey '97, and Dorothy Sandberg (nee Halsey) '02. Thomas and Liz are retired and live in Dallas, Texas.

Steve Fox '88 and Wife Terese


Steve '88 and Terese Fox returned to ISB for another visit and walk around campus - this time to see the new high school. Steve and Terese return to Brussels often and this was the fifth time Steve had been back to campus since he left ISB. Steve and Terese live in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Ben Groverman '96 and Family


Ben Groverman '96, his wife Emily Robin, Director of Advancement at the American School of Paris, and their 3 children were visiting from Paris for the weekend and wanted to pay the ISB campus a visit.

Leslie Marshall '85 and Family


Leslie Marshall '85 visited ISB with her husband and four daughters. She attended elementary school at ISB from 1976 - 1979 and has many fond memories of the school that she wanted to share with her family. In particular, she remembers the blue concrete "tube train" from the playground, the Potato Museum, and the concrete "magic mushroom" that used to be in the forest! Leslie and her family live in Calgary, Alberta.

Camila Pozzi '12


Camila Pozzi '12 returned to ISB with a friend to walk around and reminisce. It was her first time back to campus since leaving ISB in 2005. Camila now lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Marcia P'26, '27, Abigail ' 26, and Eliza '27 Krishnan returned to ISB for a play date with friends from their years at ISB. Abigail and Eliza attended ISB from 2014 to 2016 and now attend the International School of Utrecht.

Matthew Thurlow '96 and Kristyn Hoy (nee Thurlow) '94 


Siblings Matthew Thurlow '96 and Kristyn Hoy (nee Thurlow) '94 returned to ISB for a visit, along with their spouses. Matthew and his wife were visiting Kristyn and her husband, who now live in Paris, and they thought that a day trip to Brussels and the ISB campus was just the ticket.

  • Alfred Daniel Frederick writes about life after teaching Middle School Science for 13 years at ISB.

  • Steve Dedlow '66 passed away in April of this year. He was a beloved friend of many former ISB alumi throughout his life and will be greatly missed.

  • Kathryn Van der Heiden '68 writes about working as a psychotherapist.

 

1970s

  • Janet Cowie writes about living in Brussels since retiring.
  • Laurie Hunt (nee Francis) '75 writes about attending the 50th reunion in 2001.
  • Kathleen Knoop (nee McGeoghegan) '76 passed away on 14 May. Kathleen was still in touch with many ISB alumni and she will be greatly missed. 
  • Richard Smith-Moore '77 writes about raising a son and a daughter and currently enjoying the grandkids.
 

1980s

  • Anne-Marie Konig writes about continuing to live in Brussels, and taking advantage of all the culture the city has to offer.
  • David Anderson '80 writes about spending free time training and competing in endurance running and triathloning.
  • Pandora Spelios '80 writes about doing some great work now with the United Nations.
  • Dana Keiser (nee Gillis) '82 writes working on philanthropic endeavours and creating a surfing school.
  • Alex Van Hoeken '86 writes about working in the mining and oil industries in South and Central America, Asia, Middle East, and Africa.
  • QueLan Engels (nee Bergen) '86 writes about living in Michigan and running two businesses.
  • John Miquel '86 writes about being an Attorney and running for City Council.
