 Frequently Asked Questions

 What is Development at ISB?

Development at ISB includes an Annual Fund campaign, fundraising events such as the Annual Auction, as well as stewardship of grants and major gifts received by the school. The ISB Development Office coordinates all fundraising activities for the school as well as alumni relations. The Board Development Committee provides strategic guidance. Additionally, a Development Council, made up of staff, faculty and parents, offers feedback from the community.

Why does ISB raise money in addition to tuition?

Unlike schools that are funded by government resources, ISB is a private, not-for-profit, independent school relying primarily on tuition revenues. We cannot rely solely on this one source of income if we are to maintain and grow as a leading international school.

Why give to ISB?

Our tuition fees enable us to sustain our core programmes.  Upgrades or improvements to the quality of the learning environment, however, require additional support. The Annual Fund helps us achieve short-term upgrades, whilst a future Capital Campaign will enable us to achieve a transformation of the campus over the coming decade.

What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is a yearly appeal that generates income through charitable gifts of all sizes. These gifts support the current operating budget of the school. The money raised through the Annual Fund is raised and spent in the same fiscal year.

Who gives?

Parents, former parents, alumni, faculty and staff, board members, corporations, foundations and friends all make gifts to ISB.

How much should I give to the Annual Fund?

Our goal is 100% participation for the Annual Fund. Your gift, whatever the amount, is greatly appreciated. High levels of Annual Fund participation demonstrate a strong level of community support and help provide the internal structure of a development programme that is needed to solicit funds for grants from foundations and corporations.

How are the priorities of the Annual Fund determined?

At the beginning of each school year, the Board of Trustees approves the goals of the Annual Fund as determined by the school management after a broad consultation of various key stakeholders.

Each year the Annual Report provides full details on how the Annual Fund money raised has been used by the school. All gifts to the school are recognized in the Annual report.

Can I give for a specific ISB programme?

Gifts to the ISB Annual Fund are unrestricted, current-use gifts that can be designated to one of the projects that is mentioned on the Annual Fund appeal each year.

A restricted gift provides funding for a purpose chosen by the donor in agreement with the school and cannot be used for anything else. Restricted gifts are usually significant amounts well above the amount of an Annual Fund gift.

How can I give to ISB?

You can give to ISB through bank transfer, online by credit card, or by check. To learn more about these payment methods go to www.isb.be/gift.

Are my gifts tax-deductible?

US citizens can donate money through our US Foundation and receive a receipt for tax deduction. Go to http://www.isb.be/ under "Giving to ISB" for more information on the ISB Foundation, or to make a gift to the Foundation. Currently, there is no tax deductibility for Belgium tax payers although the school is looking to address this issue.

Who should I contact for more information or to get involved?

Please contact ISB Development Director Mimi Fairman for all questions relative to Development and alumni relations: fairmanm@isb.be or +32 (0)2 661 4235.
