Students Explore Personal Choice in Learning [Video]

The Middle School Personal Learning (PL) Programme was launched at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year with the intention of equipping students with the tools they will need to become conscious and responsible global citizens and innovative thinkers who understand how to use social media responsibly to network and empower others.

At the beginning of this programme, we launched a series of modules that we felt were essential to the development of our students in grades 7, 8 and 9. The skills explored in these modules included social networking, organizational strategies, expressing ourselves creatively, communicating with others effectively, mindfulness, and the importance of staying active, to name just a few.

Following this 6-week period, we invited speakers from both inside and outside of the ISB community to address the students in our “Inspiring Voices from the Community” segment. The intention was to encourage students to begin thinking about their personal interests and how they could foster their skills and expertise in a particular area to eventually help others and become more confident lifelong learners. More than anything, our guest speakers reminded students about the importance of taking chances, trying something new, and not being afraid to fail.

Our most recently completed section of the PL programme was our choice modules, wherein students chose one module from a possible 26 options led by passionate faculty and staff members. The modules provided students with opportunities to discover, explore, and celebrate their personal passions - with optional modules in gardening, yoga, jewelry-making, blogging, and much more.
