Frequently asked questions

Which of ISB's four school divisions will my child be in?

We usually place students in the grade which matches their age group. Please note that the final decision on grade placement is taken by the Head of the relevant school.

Early Childhood Centre: age 2½ to 7/8
Elementary School: age 8 to 11
Middle School: age 12 to 14
High School: age 15 to 18.

The school system our children are currently in is very different from ISB. How will you know what level of work they are capable of?

Before we confirm a place at ISB, the Head of the relevant school looks very carefully at the school reports and other documentation that our Admissions office asks you for. This material will begin to build a picture of your child for us, and if follow-up information is needed, we will get in touch.

Once students start at ISB the classroom and subject teachers are able to build on that intitial picture as they keep a careful eye on students' academic and social development. From the initial information and from continuing observation, the teacher is able to build challenging goals in each study area for each student.

How do we know that our students are successful?

How do I find out how my child is doing at school?

We keep you fully in the picture. Our teachers welcome parents as active partners in the education of their children. Home support and interest make all the difference.

Apart from the many opportunities for informal contact, there are also specific times throughout the year when teachers meet with individual families. We involve parents in school developments by running regular information and "question and answer" sessions. It's not a one-way process: we can learn from you too.

What external examinations and tests are offered at ISB?

The International Schools Assessment at specific grades in Elementary, Middle and High Schools

The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, grades 11 - 12

Advanced Placement examinations, grades 10-12

It is also possible to take SAT and SSAT tests, if these are necessary for onward study. SAT preparation classes are available at extra cost through the Lifelong Learning programme.

What about when we move on to another school in another country?

The curriculum your children encounter when they move will not be the same as at ISB. However, our approach to learning encourages confidence in our students: they  know where to find the knowledge they need and are adept at building new friendships and new support networks. We keep in touch with our leaving families and often hear how well ISB students flourish in new environments.

How does ISB compare to other schools?

The best way for you to make that judgement is to come and visit us.

Of course, we think that ISB is second to none. Our academic results are excellent: we regularly achieve around a 97% success rate in the International Baccalaureate, against a worldwide average of  84%. However, school is not only about "success". ISB students are fully rounded individuals who care about the world they live in and are ready to make their contribution.
