High School

Preparing young people for life beyond school

Grade 10 - Grade 12(13)

The High School serves a diverse student body with a wide range of needs, talents, interests and futures. We offer them a rich, varied programme designed to meet our mission of inclusion, challenge and success for every student. The programme comprises the following four complementary elements of academics, advisory, arts and athletics.

Advisory

While the heart of our programme is "academic", we are equally committed to our belief that an education is more than an assemblage of academic learning. Our school is a community that builds character, a dedication to service and a range of "life skills", from strategic awareness to collaborative leadership. These aspects of learning are delivered and supported through our Advisory Programme, within which small teams of students meet regularly with their Advisory Teacher to plan projects, work in teams and receive advice and support on their own learning as they progress through ISB.

Arts

We believe that the "aesthetic response" within all of us should be nurtured and cultivated and we offer a wide range of opportunities across the arts for students to develop their creativity, acquire llife-long skills and enjoy performance. Our programme covers visual art and performing arts, including music and theatre.

Athletics

We believe that all of us need to develop positive attitudes towards health, fitness, competiont and collaboration that, again, will serve us through life. ISB offers the most extensive competitve athletics programme in Europe, with many High School Students deeply involved in sports.

The ISB learning experience in the High School prepares all students for graduation and a successful life beyond school. For more information explore the web site and download the brochures below.

Academics

ISB offers 3 forms of High School Diploma: academic, general and individualized.  The Individualized Diploma is awarded to students in our Special Education Unit who have achieved individually tailored goals set by the staff.

Students are also able to participate in the following programmes:

The IB Diploma

ISB has been authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme since January 1977, and currently about 75% of ISB students follow the rigorous 2-year course of study spanning subjects in literature (English or mother tongue), science, mathematics, humanities, language and the arts. Students must complete six 2-year courses, a Theory of Knowledge course and a 4,000 word Extended Essay.  They are also required to participate in CAS (Creativity, Action, Service).

The AP Programme

ISB students are also offered the opportunity to follow a rigorous programme of 1-year courses spanning subjects in English, modern languages, science, math and humanities.

Building International Bridges - 3 week student trip

Our ‘roadmap' for this learning journey is The Common Ground Curriculum.

As with many things, curriculum can be made over-complicated. In getting to its essence, we find it very useful to strip it down to a few ‘essential questions' that will give you a sense of our approach to teaching and learning at ISB.

What do students need to understand, know and be able to do, to be happy, successful, ethical individuals?

What is the right 'content' for an international school?

Where did the ISB Curriculum 'come from'?

How do I know my child will ‘fit in' when s/he goes home, or moves to another international school?

How do we know that our students are successful?
