Frequently asked questions

Why do we believe ISB is special?

There are many things that make ISB an exciting place to work. Three reasons, however, stand out above all the others: our vision, our focus on learning and our curriculum.

A powerful vision

‘Everyone included, everyone challenged, everyone successful' - is a simple message, but to put it into practice at every level is extremely complex. We are, however, deeply committed to these values and strive for excellence in all aspects of our work. In practice, this means that we:

  • Accept the whole range of students, including those with severe learning difficulties
  • Include our community in key discussions and decisions
  • Work in collaborative teams
  • Use student profiling to ensure that each student is genuinely successful
  • Have a focus on learning

Our mission commits us to learning as the driving force in our school, for all students and adults, including our administrative staff. All planning and all major projects are evaluated in terms of their impact on learning. ISB is truly learning-focused, in ways that few schools approach.

A coherent international curriculum

We have also designed a unique curriculum model, from Nursery - Grade 12, which addresses the common ground of human experience from the multiple perspectives of our students. Embedded in this framework are standards and benchmarks in all learning areas. The whole curriculum is supported by curriculum mapping technology for ease of access and transparency.

What does that mean for me as a teacher?

It means that:

  • You will join a professional learning community of educators who are constantly engaged in professional learning, challenging themselves to move to the next level of professional expertise.

  • You will have second language students in your classroom and students with a range of learning differences.

  • You will utilize a range and balance of teaching and assessment practices reflective of the learning needs of your students.

  • You will use technology to enhance learning and to communicate about learning with students and parents.

  • You will care about, and be responsible for, not just the academic development of your students but for their development into happy, successful, ethical international citizens.

  • You will plan and reflect as a member of a team or department.
  • For both teachers and administrative staff, you will be part of an exciting, ambitious school that is breaking new ground in international education and that we will expect you to add all your own knowledge, experience and passion to the pool of expertise already working at ISB.

What kind of lifestyle will I have?

Brussels is a green, well-organized, safe, ‘manageable' city in which to live. In terms of the arts, fine dining, architecture, it makes an extremely attractive home, as evidenced by the length of stay of many of our staff, and within easy reach of a host of major European cities. Travel, both locally and internationally, is easy and affordable. Health care is second to none.

In terms of salary, ISB benchmarks its package every three years against a group of comparable international schools and maintains its overall package in the top 70%. Taxation in Belgium is high, but compensated for by outstanding services such as health care and transport. The school's own pension and medical care programmes are outstanding.

As a general guide, our staff live in comfortable housing, own a car should they so choose, travel widely, and stay a long time!

What kind of teachers does ISB hire?

Our recruitment policies match our mission: we are inclusive. We hire very young teachers and very experienced teachers. We hire single teachers and teachers with partners. We also welcome teachers with children, who have a wonderful experience at ISB. We are totally non-discriminatory in terms of age, sex, religion, culture, and sexual orientation.

What counts for us is intelligence, energy, commitment to students, passion for learning, a collaborative approach and a close alignment with our mission.

All new teachers take part in a well-developed mentorship programme that supports them through their first year at ISB. In keeping with our approaches to differentiated learning, this programme varies according to the level of previous experience of the individual teacher.
