About the Learning Institutes

Two years ago, ISB introduced a programme of Summer Learning Institutes for its faculty. We identified core sets of skills for international teachers and brought in some of the world’s leading trainers in these areas. Teachers worked together with the Course Leaders for four days, and followed this with a year of reflective practice as they implemented new learning.

The Institutes were a major success. We find that this form of professional development, in which professional learning takes place ‘at home’, in context, with colleagues, is easily the most effective. Additionally, the emphasis in all Institutes is practical-they are designed to provide useful, useable strategies that improve student learning. We find our teachers enjoy and appreciate the emphasis on practicality.

Having successfully launched the Institutes, we now plan to open the 2008 Institutes to a limited number of colleagues from other schools. Our hope is that this will launch an ongoing professional dialogue among our faculties.
