All around the campus students, parents, faculty and staff are engaged in numerous service projects - and many of these outstanding initiatives not only provide a valuable context for learning, but also raise funds for causes beyond ISB. Below we have highlighted some of these projects and the great work that the ISB Community is doing. | 2009-2010 Projects: | | Togo During the spring break, eleven high school students participated on the service trip to Togo. They helped Espace Social (a local charity) build and furnish a library. The effort lasted all year, as it included fundraising, going on the trip and briefing the High School on the project. After two weeks of hard labor, the library was completed and the town hosted an inauguration filled with dancing and music. The objective of the library is to offer material to the local teachers. In the future, a trained librarian will be present to supervise the students as they discover the incredible books the library has to offer. The trip was definitely a success and enthusiastic ISB students are expected to return to Togo next year.
Ghana The service trip to Ghana, which took place during the spring break, was a new addition to ISB’s service projects. Twenty ISB students worked in collaboration with “Habitat for Humanity” to construct houses for the local people. After two weeks, multiple houses had been built through the hard labor of ISB students. The trip was a fantastic success as it helped the people in Ghana and it gave students the ability to see global issues first-hand.
10th Grade Service Projects For the third consecutive year, ISB students visited various charities across Brussels. Each homeroom was assigned a task, and left campus to help these various charities. The tasks included going to a retirement home, helping at a soup kitchen, picking up trash in the forest and visiting a horse farm that helped handicapped people. ISB students visited these charities three times this year and this program is planned to continue next year.
CAP48 This year, ISB students also contributed to “CAP48” by going to the streets of Brussels and selling pens for the charity. CAP48, a charity organized by RTBF, helps different projects which improve the lives of handicapped people in Belgium.
Ukraine Service Trip During the summer of 2008, twelve Middle School students participated on the service trip to Ukraine. On the trip, they met with children who were in crisis situations, such as being homeless or having alcoholic parents. Together with the children, they set up wallpaper in apartments and climbed the highest mountain in Ukraine, mount Hoverla.
