Director Lee Fertig Visits Alumni in Five North American Cities

 

From 29 January to 5 February, ISB Director Lee Fertig undertook a marathon alumni tour or 5 events in 5 cities in 8 days. As always, there were great connections, lots of nostalgia, and many demonstrations of ongoing commitment to this school community that has wonderfully served so many for 65 years.

ISB Speech and Debate Alumni Return to Campus

 

On the 2 - 4 December 2017, ISB hosted the New European Speech, Debate, and Acting Association Speech and Debate Tournament, both a responsibility and a pleasure which comes around every five years. A number of ISB alumni who were former speech and debate protégés' generously offered to come back to help judge the tournament and to give something back to their former school and speech and debate coaches.

Following the great success of the 65th Anniversary & Homecoming Celebrations last October in Brussels, as well as a number of well-attended alumni gatherings this winter, including events in Toronto, Minneapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, Seattle, and of course, Brussels, we are very pleased to announce further alumni events and gatherings in the 2016-2017 school year.

Remembering Middle School Teacher Frank Morandi

 

ISB Today regrets to share the sad news that former Middle School colleague - and very good friend to many of us - Frank Morandi, has passed away. A talented teacher, Frank was also an accomplished basketball coach who had an exceptional rapport with students both inside and outside the classroom. ISB Faculty Members Lisa Schubert and Former Faculty Member James Bell, Paul Boucher and Laura Boucher remember Frank.

A Tribute to Roger Vanderhye, Former Head of the ISB Elementary School 

 

Roger Vanderhye (1956-2017) served as Elementary School Head at ISB from 2000 to 2002. A dynamic leader, he was known for his innovative approach to education and his willingness to listen to people who sought him out. He was a hands-on international educator, dedicated to and successful at enabling the people he worked with. Phil Hesse remembers Roger in this tribute.

From ISB to Building Rockets - Michael Bernard Shoots for the Stars

 

During the recent Alumni Events Tour in North America, ISB Today was able to meet with Michael Bernard '05 who now works at SpaceX in Hawthorne, CA. Michael shared his memories of his time at ISB and how it helped inform his work at Space X today.

Sam Horn '10 Creates a Little Alchemy

 

The ISB Alumni Office was delighted to connect alumnus Sam Horn with the Middle School/High School Library. On 27 January, Sam visited the ISB campus and received four copies of The Alchemist from Librarian Charlotte Veuger to support the refugee aides that are working with him in Serbia.

David Richard and Family

 

David Richard '79 was in Brussels over the Christmas holidays and wanted to bring his family by to see ISB and show them where he spent my high school years from 1975-1979.

Gloria Schwammlein P'92, P'94


Gloria Schwammlein P'92, P'94 and her husband Gary lived in Brussels from 1982 to 1990, and their children Brian, Karin and Allan all attended ISB. On a recent trip to Europe, Gloria brought Brian's '92 children to ISB for a visit to their Dad's old school.

Ece Artan '16, Class Representative for the Class of 2016, visited ISB with a friend from London so she could show her around her former school.

Edward Flaherty


Edward Flaherty '64 attended ISB for his senior year and has never forgotten his time here. This trip to Brussels was his first visit back to ISB since he graduated so many years ago.
