Message from the Director

As we near the end of another school year, I am reminded of the power of the cyclical nature of the academic calendar. As long as we remain on a standard 10-month school calendar that begins in September and ends in June, there will always be rituals, traditions, and capstone events that mark certain times of the year.

Frances Bekhechi - This Year's James Sidgwick Teacher Recognition Award Recipient

In May, we invited the ISB alumni community to nominate Early Childhood Center and Elementary  School teachers whose professionalism and dedication deserves to be recognised. We are pleased to announce that this year The James Sidgwick Teacher Recognition Award has been awarded to Frances Bekhechi. Frances taught in both the ECC and ES from 1989-2013.

ISB Alumni Respond to Brussels Terror Attacks

On behalf of the entire ISB Community, 'ISB Today' would like to acknowledge and thank the many alumni around the world who expressed their concern, sadness, and best wishes in the days and weeks following the March 22 terrorist attacks in Brussels. ISB Pays Tribute to Retiring Faculty

June 2016 sees four faculty members retire from ISB after decades of service to the school.  Kimete Basha, Jeffrey Brewster, Mary Ferguson, and Christine Laphkas are all celebrating their careers and achievements this spring with colleagues across the divisions as they bid farewell to ISB.  Each of them has graciously agreed to share reflections on their professional and personal learning, their ISB experience, and the things they're looking forward to next.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Nikita Safarian - A Story of Courage

In 2012, Nikita was unable to attend his graduation ceremony due to a serious attack, resulting in a severe head trauma. After four years of intensive therapy at a number of different hospitals and clinics, and above all as a result of his determination and courageous efforts, Nikita survived to make amazing strides in his recovery. On 3 June 2016, Nikita finally walked across the stage to receive his High School Diploma to a standing ovation in the presence of his family and ISB friends from his graduating year.

ISB Alum Innovators Ilana Taub and Michael Minch-Dixon Tackle the Global Issue of Food Waste

In December 2013, ISB alum Ilana Taub '04 and Michael Minch-Dixon '04 founded Snact, a company that makes a chewy fruit snack with all the ingredients sourced from fruit that would otherwise have been discarded. This innovative concept tackles the important issue of the mountain of food wasted every day and also greatly contributes to the local economy.

ISB Today was delighted when beloved former teacher Colin Nimmos agreed to write a short profile piece for this edition of the alumni newsletter. At alumni events, Colin is always brought up and talked about with fondness and affection. And in this piece, his legendary humour and wit continue to shine through!

One ISB Icon Deserves Another - Ivan Read is Interviewed by David Hayward

Ivan Read began working at ISB in 1955 and taught at the school as Maths teacher for 29 years. Ivan is an ""ISB institution" and still lives in Brussels and sees his former faculty friend David Hayward regularly. David, an "ISB institution" himself,  kindly agreed to interview Ivan for this edition of ISB Today.
